Snappy H’appy #7: Sketching Bougainvillea Blossoms

I photographed a beautiful Bougainvillea last week, eager to model for this sketching challenge.

This challenge asks you to (1) share a good photo that you took or edited last week, (2) run it through a photo app on your smartphone or mobile device and share with us the result. We’re back to the theme of Art effects this week – Sketch effects.   JX from weliveinaflat

Photo taken with Lumix FZ35, slight edit in Snapseed

I started with my go-to app, Pixlr Express. I wasn’t satisfied with the sketch adjustment original, so I added the filter Ingrid and it brought out more ‘pencil’ detail of those pretty Bougainvillea blossoms.

I then tried Camera360, the app that JX mentioned in her wonderful post about sketching apps (a must read here).

Then off to Sketch Guru, an app I’ve used before.

And finally I used Paper Artist for a colored pencil rendering of the Bougainvillea. I see both colored pencil and watercolor pencil simulations in this.

Of the black and white pencil sketches, my pick for the challenge is the last one, the Sketch Guru. It’s style is like something I’d do if I could actually sketch. What about you? Do you have a favorite?

As always I welcome your comments on this or any other part of my blog. Please head on over to my co-host in this challenge, weliveinaflat and see the rest of our awesome Snappy H’appy crew:  Melinda (1stWorldDog)Christy (Sassmuffins)CompletelyDisappearGretchen (Zeke’s Adventures)Meg (Little Dogs Laughed)Blogagaini and Mary (RoxyTheTravelingDog).

P.S. My favorite is the colored pencil one but I’m not sure that counts as part of the challenge. However, I love color, and Bougainvillea has loads of it! 😉

I adore that one too! I’ve used it for things like my Facebook cover photo. It makes me so happy just looking at it.

Love them all but think your color choice with Paper Artist is simply stunning! Since this is one of the challenges I missed while rebuilding my website, I will definitely have to check it out. From the several choices of black & white photos/sketches, I really like the softer effects of Camera 360.

Thank you so much! This challenge has been such fun. All this experimentation and exposure to so many effects and apps. JX has done such a great job with exploring all these possibilities.

Wow! These are all terrific-I love the black and white effects you got, but the color sketch is really amazing-terrific work for the challenge!

Thanks Meghan, I also have android, so I will take a look at that app. Thanks for the helpful info.

I agree Sally! That’s one reason I chose this image, because of all the inherent line detail on the leaves and the flowers. Thank you!

Thank goodness I didn’t let not being able to draw stop me from going to art school (where I didn’t get much better). I ‘draw’ much better with 3d work.

This photo challenge submission of yours turned out so well. I really like the colours on the painted edition. That is a paid app, right?

This photo challenge submission of yours turned out so well. I really like the colours on the painted edition. Is that also on the sketch app?

Another exercise in the variety of apps available. My favorite is Sketch Guru, mainly because it perks the leaves as design elements and gives the image a slight vintage patina.

I just love to see what all the apps can do! Fascinating and stunning Meghan. You did a great job! 😀
