Random Moments of Delight: Reveling in Routine

I like having a routine, because everything else… is so unpredictable. – Jordana Brewster

I enjoy my routine now. Our motor home is at a peaceful, spacious, RV park in Bakersfield, CA, so we have all the comforts of home, just in a 400 sq ft space. I absolutely adore our shower … do any of you have a skylight in your shower?

Life has a rhythm now. Hubby Tim leaves town to go to work in Camarillo (2 hours away) on Monday after dinner, and returns around noon on Friday.  When Tim is gone, Cooper gets me up in the morning. He’s my very own cattledog alarm clock. Luckily he’s learned that 9:30 is the earliest he can rouse me.

My very own cattledog alarm clock.

Tuxedo Jack is very helpful when I am creating my art work, which I do most days. I find all sorts of bits of paper trailing after him stuck to his fluffy tail. Here he adds cat hair to my art journal page to finish it off.

I don’t hear much from the Buffy Cat… she seems to be in hibernation mode. Occasionally she joins me for my afternoon read on the couch, to Cooper’s ‘cat herding’ dismay, otherwise she stays on the dash of the motor home, out of his way.

I’m involved in two year-long art projects with supportive communities. Get Messy Art Journal is one and 52 Portraits is another. Doing art work every week day is now a welcome routine. If you want to follow my 2016 art journey you’ll find it on my other blog, Starfire Blossoms.

When I am alone in the RV I do make a mess with my art work.

But I also have places to store the materials when a project is done. Granted, the stuff is tucked away all over the place: under the bed, in my clothes cupboard, in a bathroom drawer, a kitchen drawer, where the bedroom TV used to be…

I have my own sense of harmonious order when I’m alone… And then Tim comes home for the weekend. Eeeeek, I have to get used to, ahem, happy clutter.

Luckily he spends quite a bit of time in his man cave. He’s fitted out our 25 foot trailer as a garage.

I adore my honey and look forward to his arrival each week. Our RV park is in a rural area (ah the smell of multiple dairies in the morning…). When Tim comes home we explore this much more countrified part of town. Don’t you just love this? Would you feel like royalty living here? 😉

We have our comfort eateries where we brunch or dine… Tina’s Diner in Maricopa, 4.5 stars on Yelp. (We ride our motorcycle there.)

Carla’s Cafe… another 4.5 stars on Yelp. We are served by both Tina and Carla at each of these diners. Tina is a character and we have lots of conversation. Carla is friendly and efficient.

The Harvest Steak House is right across the highway from us yet we only went there because of the reviews on Yelp. Sheesh, you’d never know it was even a going concern if there weren’t cars in the parking lot, because the signs are run-down. But it is very nice. Good basic food, good service.

We love Oh! Noodles (fusion Asian – I don’t have a photo)… it’s better for our waistlines than the home cooked comfort food at the other three places. Thank goodness I eat sparsely throughout the week… clearly I indulge on the weekend! Ok, enough of the restaurant reviews.

I understand that some people view routine as a negative.

But for me, as a bipolar, it is important. Without structure I can lose focus and even fall into depression. I am retired now and don’t have work as a weekly committment to keep me mentally healthy, so I am glad I have found a framework to my life now. I’m a happy camper (figuratively and literally)! I’d love to know if you revel in routine or find it confining. What are your favorite habits?

As always I am so pleased that you visited. Your comments warm my heart and put a smile in my day.

I’ve decided to change Random Moments of Delight from a weekly happening to monthly. You have all month to join in as many times as you want! This post is the one for January. The rest will happen on the first Sunday of each month.

Would you like to share a random delight that happened for you this month? You can use the linky below or simply put a link to your post, in a comment. This party lasts all month, and is about sharing special moments with each other whatever form they take (more info here).

You can link from Instagram, Tumblr, Facebook, a blog … (as long as it’s your work). It would be lovely if you would mention my FireBonnet name (firebonnet.com or @firebonnet on Instagram) when you do 😉 .

I know what my life would be without routine-and it is not a pretty sight-dogs have a wonderful way of *tricking* you into routines I have found-but they do it in such a way that is fun that you never notice until it is too late 😉 Your art projects sound terrific Meghan-good luck with them all!

I agree with you about routine. After being a teacher for 35 years, the value of routine cannot be denied. Kids LOVE knowing what the day will bring. It’s comforting. My retirement days developed organically, so they suit my life perfectly. Breaks for other fun stuff are always welcome, but so is coming back to the daily routine.

I'd love to hear from you!
