Working a temp job is kind of like being an actress in a play.
I’ve done temp work for over a year now. Each job is different. Some of you might remember my post about being a telephone operator at a general insurance agency a month or so ago (One Ringy Dingy). Well, now I’m a data entry worker at a manufacturing company that makes parts for airplanes (this particular plant makes SMALL parts).
interview audition for a job role I get an idea what I’ll be doing part I’m going to play and whether I would be right for it. In general my agent agent has found me interesting temp positions roles.
The work I’m doing now is fun because not only do I work “up front” in a cubicle….
But get to go down through the factory to the quality assurance set of offices in “the back” to get my work, instructions, and questions answered.
I have to wear
clothes a costume that is right (and passes safety guidelines) for a factory. Every time I head to the factory floor I don my earplugs, safety glasses and steel toe shoes…
Although the company I work for has steel toe slip-ons that I could use…
I have to go down on the factory floor at least five times a day, and it isn’t that easy to “slip” them on.
I decided to buy my own steel toe boots. After all, every actress has at least one costume piece she’s bought for a play!
I have an audience in the quality assurance office… the women there wear basic work shirts and jeans because the environment is greasy and grimy. I’ve brought ‘a breath of fresh air’ to the office! (quote from one of the women I work with). What can I say, I was a costume designer for many years!
job role is challenging in different ways. My telephone operator job was only in the afternoons, but, as could be expected I was inundated by noise… With this job, which is full-time, I have to get to work by 7:30 am… even my hair objects to this!
The data entry
position role is simple for me as I’ve been an administrative analyst among other things. It’s only for five weeks (not enough time to get bored) and I plan to enjoy it. This is the first time I’ve ever had to wear a badge and a key card, so I made a badge holder to add to my wardrobe costume.
job production ends, I’ll let you know what else my “agent” finds for me! How about you? Do you ever think of what you do as a role in a play?
