Random Moments of Delight #40: Temp Job Theatrics

Working a temp job is kind of like being an actress in a play.

factory girl1.1

I’ve done temp work for over a year now. Each job is different. Some of you might remember my post about being a telephone operator at a general insurance agency a month or so ago (One Ringy Dingy). Well, now I’m a data entry worker at a manufacturing company that makes parts for airplanes (this particular plant makes SMALL parts).

When I interview audition for a job role I get an idea what I’ll be doing part I’m going to play and whether I would be right for it. In general my agent agent has found me interesting temp positions roles.

The work I’m doing now is fun because not only do I work “up front” in a cubicle….

But get to go down through the factory to the quality assurance set of offices in “the back” to get my work, instructions, and questions answered.

I have to wear clothes a costume that is right (and passes safety guidelines) for a factory. Every time I head to the factory floor I don my earplugs, safety glasses and steel toe shoes…

Although the company I work for has steel toe slip-ons that I could use…

I have to go down on the factory floor at least five times a day, and it isn’t that easy to “slip” them on.

I decided to buy my own steel toe boots. After all, every actress has at least one costume piece she’s bought for a play!

I have an audience in the quality assurance office… the women there wear basic work shirts and jeans because the environment is greasy and grimy. I’ve brought ‘a breath of fresh air’ to the office! (quote from one of the women I work with). What can I say, I was a costume designer for many years!

Each job role is challenging in different ways. My telephone operator job was only in the afternoons, but, as could be expected I was inundated by noise… With this job, which is full-time, I have to get to work by 7:30 am… even my hair objects to this!

The data entry position role is simple for me as I’ve been an administrative analyst among other things. It’s only for five weeks (not enough time to get bored) and I plan to enjoy it. This is the first time I’ve ever had to wear a badge and a key card, so I made a badge holder to add to my wardrobe costume.

When this job production ends, I’ll let you know what else my “agent” finds for me! How about you? Do you ever think of what you do as a role in a play?

As always I am so pleased that you visited. Your comments warm my heart and put a smile in my day.

Hi! well I like how you keep it natural – because if you force yourself to come on and blog it would end up showing in posts that were not as genuine and so in my opinion, keep it real even if that means once a week – once a month – or less.
    Cheers 🙂

Perhaps it does mean that… wink wink. I spoke too soon about the boredom… apparently I bore easily… I’ve been out of my mind with boredom all week… gak. But hey, it is temporary after all and every paycheck that comes in goes back out to pay off a credit card. I LIKE it!

I’d love to have you join a challenge if it floats your boat, but whether you do or don’t I always look forward to your comments! How funny that you got a shot of your hair standing on end too! what fun… I hope you had a great week. I’m not online much with this job (no internet at work ;( ). I just don’t have the time or inclination to jump on the computer at the end of the day especially when I’ve challenge myself to do something handmade with my hands instead. So it leaves blogging for the weekend and even then it’s limited! When I retire again I’ll come back!

I think working temp jobs would be great. Like you said, no boredom. Sounds like you’re having fun with no commitment. Wait……does that mean you are a swinging single of the work world? LOL

Oh meghan, this was so fun and I love the analogy – yes, I have found that some jobs are this way. and how cool to see they have slip on steel toes – and I love the boots you chose – pink of course! 🙂

but my favorite part of this post is that picture elf your hair – oh my, because I took a similar one this week – I normally have long hair but I got a short short cut in June and now it is about the length of yours – and well, I was doing a body clay treatment and actually got a picture of my hair standing on ends cause it was so fun – and then to see your picture today – well it makes me smile for so many reasons – but you are just so fun! so naturally you — and I like everything about it.
Okay, have a nice week and I am going to try and join in on one of your challenges in the next couple weeks- I am not doing that many this fall – but your happy hands one or this RMD one is on my list…
