Random Moments of Delight #14: I Can Run!

Yes, you read that right, I can run!

For some of you who don’t know me you might think that’s an odd thing to crow about, after all can’t most people run? But those of you who know me, or have read a post or two on my blog (Happy Birthday to my Hip) know that after a few years of arthritis and then a hip replacement, this is a milestone.

It’s been a year since my hip replacement, and a few months since my surgeon told me I have no more restrictions to my movement. But I’ve been wary of running.

I’ve done circuit training for about 8 months now, but it’s only the past few weeks that I’ve done a little jogging in the gym between machines. This week I made the leap (metaphorically, I’m not actually leaping yet). I decided to try jogging around the park a block away from our house.

What’s so lovely about this park is that it is dog friendly and when no one is there, Cooper is off-leash.

run 1

Even though Cooper gets long walks with Dad and Frisbee sessions with me, he could use a run each day is well. Let’s face it, he and I both have big butts! 😉 And who can beat this gorgeous California spring weather!

run 5

I jog on the grass around the perimeter of the small park. I try not to have too hard an impact on my still bone growing bionic hip.  It’s quite amusing that I use the word run or even jog since it’s more like a trot. Someone walking fast would pass me in a flash… Cooper has time to smell all the pee-mail in the park.

run 3

Eventually I’m hoping to trot around the park without stopping, but at the moment I walk some and of course stop for the obligatory photo ops, like these lovely spring flowers.

As time goes by I’ll get more sure of my balance, and gain some stamina and most importantly my confidence. Eventually I might be running around the park two or three times! Cooper and I will both work our butts off! 😉

As always I welcome your comments on this or any other part of my blog. I’d love to hear your random moments of delight. This challenge (or rather non-challenge) is about sharing special moments  with each other each week (read here for more info). Please put a link back here, in your post, so others may take part if they wish.

Hey… ya gotta stay up on the technology ;). It’s just a fun app I have on my phone that does all the work for me. The key is getting some video to plug in it! Thanks!

Good for you! Congrats on your hip! I can’t run because it hurts my neck but have been walking regularly.

I wish I could fix that! I love talking to you and hearing your comments. Thank you so much for commenting on this one. I’ll just have to comment on yours more often to keep in touch! In the meantime I’ll know that you are a friendly lurker… 😉

I haven’t been commenting because I still haven’t figured out why I can’t get notified of your responses, but I want to leave a comment now. CONGRATS! You go, girl! That is just fabulous to hear. Run like the wind, even if it starts out like a soft breeze. 🙂

I don't think my artificial knee will ever be up to running again. But I'm going to try to get new tires on the tricycle this summer, and get out on the bike paths.

For me, running is my best excuse for photo ops! I don't ever leave my house for a run without my camera. Congratulations on being able to run again!

I was NEVER a runner. Dancer yes, horseback riding yes, but running or bicycle riding no. Yet those are what I’m really excited to be able to do now. Isn’t life funny? Congrats on your bionic knee!

Running – even the slow kind is awesome. As a former runner (VERY former), I remember the feeling. My bionic knee isn’t a year old yet, but even when it is, I think I’ll stick to walking.

Congratulations! I remember, after my hip replacement, being able to go up and down stairs without fear and the joy of walking a few miles. I never graduated to running, just fast walking. Your park excursions with Cooper are just what you both need.
