Friday I got up the courage to send my blog to Peek for a review, a free service from

I saw this service, and an example of the results, on Steve Says. I was very impressed with Steve for daring to have a random stranger take an objective look at his blog and honestly comment on it.

Go Steve!
Go Steve!

Could I be that brave? I was really worried about criticism, but luckily very impulsive, and before I thought about it… I signed up.

What have I done?
What have I done?

They said it might take a few days for the results… I thought cool, I have plenty of time to do some self talk. You know like “who cares what a stranger thinks, Mom likes it”.  But in truth, I have put a lot of time and effort into making my blog organized and easy to navigate, while keeping it attractive, so I really did want to know if it came across that way to a stranger. The review isn’t testing the material after all, just the user experience.

I got the results just a few hours later, no time for self talk after all. I bit the bullet and watched, shushing my husband the whole time. As I watched the video review I agreed with every constructive criticism given. And lo and behold, the guy liked it!!!!! How cool is that?

I’ve embedded it below, but I know I hardly ever watch a video in a post that’s longer than 2.5 minutes, and this one is 5. I don’t expect anyone who isn’t really interested in the process to watch it… except my husband of course 😉 . (A larger version of the video can be seen here.)

I was proud of myself for having the courage to send my blog in for a review. I’ve come a long way in my confidence level. Not only that, I went right to work figuring out how to correct the stuff the guy found confusing, and implemented it the next morning.

So that’s my moment for this week, and as always, I welcome your comments on this or any other part of this blog.

Wait a minute…

I can’t hold it in any longer!

I danced around the bedroom with glee … he gave me a 10 out of 10 and said he doesn’t do that very often. Take THAT you mean old 1st grade teacher who said I was silly; and you stupid Jr High peers who called me names; and that Sr High date who said he didn’t want to be seen with me because I had red hair… I ROCKED that review!

Later losers!
Later losers! 😉

😉 🙂 😀

I’d love to hear your random moments of delight. This challenge (or rather non-challenge) is about sharing special moments  with each other each week (read here for more info). Please put a link back here, in your post, so others may take part if they wish. Chow! (And yes Steve… the bitstrips are in your honor…)

  1. Woo that’s great! I’m tempted but all those wonderful things he said about yours makes me think I’ve got a lot of work to do! I did watch the whole thing and think that’s such a brave thing to do. It’s one thing measuring your success on number of people linking and commenting and visiting, but having a stranger take 5 minutes of their time to analyse something you’re worked hard to create is so scary! Well done you! 🙂

  2. Thanks for always taking the time to reply – and having your art up there is way cool because some people are in the market for art and that is awesome to have that right there for those who are collecting. (instead of emailing you asking – it is right there if needed) 🙂

  3. Of course you don’t have to write a post about it! And if it hadn’t been such a nice review, believe me I wouldn’t have 😉 .

  4. Thank you Justine! (yes redheads rock 😉 ) Wish I did the cartoons.. but alas, they are something called bitstrips, which is on Facebook. You can create your own avatar and then choose what kinds of situations to be in.

  5. Thanks Mara! I wish they were my drawings, but they are something called bitstrips, which is on Facebook. You can create your own avatar and then choose what kinds of situations to be in.

  7. Thank you so much Y. That is great feedback! I too worry about the busy-ness of it, but do hope the organization makes up for it. And, honestly, I hate ads on blogs… (of course my artwork display is in essence an ad, but not a glaring one). Yes, the two in one blog was the merging of the pet blog and this one. At this point tho they really aren’t two in one anymore, I just have three ‘contributing writers’ besides myself on firebonnet… 😉
Actually, the loading page came about when I was trying to increase my loading time (which was slow) and I thought people might want something to look at. I’ve since increased my load time a lot, and may not need it. It’s interesting that it seems to make it less personal. Hmmmm.
Again, Thank you for taking the time to comment so honestly about my blog. I really appreciate it. I like that you feel energy and fun when you visit.

  8. well…. I like your site because it is easy to navigate and it feels charged and energized. It does feel kind of busy – but that is not a bad thing – not at all.

It also actually feels like a website and not really a blog (to me) like with all the double sidebar stuff and then the footer stuff – But no ads!! so that is way cool. and even with the stuff, is still EASY to navigate because when I come to find the post of the day – well it is right there in the center – and then it is easy to scroll down and comment if I want to. 🙂 and I usually do….

I also like your blog because to me it provides a great example of what you get when you find external hosting for a WP blog – whereas the majority of blogs I follow/visit – well they look way different – simpler and more basic (which is also not a bad thing, right?).

The last two things – first, I have to admit that I never “got it” when you said this blog was two blogs in one. Was that the pet blog mixed with your regular fire bonnet one?
And while I think the loading page is nice (the recent one that shows the percent of time with a photo collage) it sorta made things feel more business like and took away a personal feel – and does it really take that long to load the next page from one click? But hey, that reviewer guy thought is was a nice techy feature – so it may be a great thing. 😛

In closing, I think your blog is colorful, energized, and fun – just like YOU! and it also gives off the feeling of being handled with some TLC.

  9. Ok, I just got back my video of feedback and I can highly recommend it! It’s fun to see how other people view your site!

I didn’t get any grades or points, my reviewer was a bit lengthy and the review was actually cut in the middle of a sentence after five minutes (but the reviewer was clearly finishing already); still it was very helpful and I will definitely use it to do some small changes on my blog.

  10. If you’ve got it, flaunt it! Congrats. I will, when I’m not out riding shotgun later, check your video. I don’t plan to get my blog checked out because it’s just random and I am too techy-challenged to do much better, but I’d still like to see what they say about yours.

  11. Wow that’s amazing huge congrats and you deserve it. It’s clear you put in loads of effort. What a cool service in not sure I’m brave enough to use it hehe. Well done there great deserved news xxx ps did you do those cartoons? They are brill. And yah people should be proud to associate with red heads!! Xx

  12. well just wanted to share that I watched your full review -and then the I watched the one on Steve says – and your review was way better – I do not always compare – but in this case there was such a difference.
Have you watched his review? It seems like the reviewer was “winging it” whereas your reviewer seemed to be more succinct and had less “dead” time from reading.

anyhow, do you want my opinion of it? as a user?

  13. Whew! You totally got my attention with this post! First of all: congrats!! And, now I think I’m going to try this review service too… By the way, I love the drawings of yourself in this post — how cute!!
