My New Challenge: #happyhandscreate

I’m challenging myself to mindfully create something with my hands daily, and I invite you to join me.

I’ve been in front of a computer for years… for my admin job as well as my art (editing photos, creating digital art and blogging). I’ve been on my smartphone texting, taking and editing photos and playing games.  I’ve shared my artwork and kept up with friends old and new on all sorts of online social media networks. The result? I’ve gone overboard, spending too much time inside my head, by being inside the digital world.

I want to get connected with my body again! …and I want to do it by mindfully creating beauty with my hands.

Each day I’m going to draw or write a poem in pen… make some jewelry or tend my herb garden… sew a bow for my granddaughter or just color with markers while my hubby cooks dinner.

These may all seem like normal things to you, but they end up being the last things I do when I’m busy. I’m much more likely to get out my iPhone and use a new photo app or head to my computer to check Facebook. It’s time for me to adjust my priorities.

I’m pretty undisciplined when I don’t have a goal, so my goal is to work on something with my hands each day, take a pic, and post it to my social networks with the hashtag “happyhandscreate”. I’m going to go even further and have a theme each week to challenge my creativity. Things like “circles” or “red” or even “sci-fi”.

Although my main purpose is to center myself by using my hands, I invite you to join me. I’m beginning a #happyhandscreate challenge. It is something that everyone can do, not just bloggers. You’ll be able to join in from Instagram, Facebook, Tumblr… you name it.

I’ll launch the challenge on Saturday on Instagram, Facebook and this blog, so stay tuned!!!!

In the meantime, I’ve been sewing, making a bracelet and doing some doodling so I don’t spend too much time on this blog post! 😉

As always I am so pleased that you visited. Your comments warm my heart and put a smile in my day. :D

I saw you followed my on Facebook… cool! I hope your health is manageable… I understand health problems quite well! I wish you well in all things you do Raewyn. And any time you want to post to the hashtag I’d love it! We’ll see together how well this experiment works. 🙂

Grounding is a great word for it! I think I am way less grounded when I live in suburbia. I am much more likely to go outside and work naturally with my body when I am living on the ranch in Idaho. Here I have to remind myself to keep in tune with my body. Printmaking… awesome. I didn’t excel in my printmaking classes so I really appreciate those who find joy and expression in it.

You have me there N! Finally following my own advice… chuckle… I’d gotten away from it (I know you weren’t intimating that I wasn’t, I’m just chuckling because it was true). I am soooo excited that I helped inspire you to more drawing. Celtic knots? Oooooo, tell me where I can learn more. That sounds like it’s right up my alley. We’ll see where this public challenge takes me. The photo one I did for a year in 2011 was invaluable for my creativity… I’m excited.

Thanks Y! I’m having a little trouble coming up with themes that will work with so many “create with your hands” options. Like how would you do “lines” when you are cooking? Ah well, guess that’s where creativity comes in right?

Great idea. I am like you. I tend to spend a lot of time on the computer with my blog and photos. I love working with my hands but am finding at the moment my health is forcing me to take breaks. But I will follow you on FaceBook and maybe try and help you along with what I am doing. If I can. 😀

I have to say that I’ve been doing a bit more of this in the last few months than I did before, and that you were the inspiration for that. A while back, you posted about Zentangling, so I looked into that. The recommended videos led me to learning Celtic knots, and after that I bought a new sketch book and have been practicing more while waiting for appointments and such. It does get one more connected with the inner self and the world around you in a way that computers never allow. Glad to see you’re following more of your own advice!
