Look Up, Look Down: Power Lines

A few weeks ago when our motorcycle decided to breakdown, I spent an hour at the side of the road waiting for help and snapping photos of power lines with my iPhone 4.

I am thrilled with the results! The day was a little overcast in places so the light wasn’t too bright. Perfect for sky shots of power lines.

We also just so happened to be parked by a really gnarly tree which made for wonderful juxtapositions. Organic vs man-made, linear vs curvilinear, simple vs complex… it made my heart happy when I saw the results.

What’s so exciting for me is that I didn’t do ANY editing on either one, including cropping (only the signature and a frame in Pixlr). That doesn’t happen very often with the iPhone. It isn’t easy to see what you really have on that little screen while you are taking it, especially outside. That’s why I take shot after shot. Well, I struck gold with these two, both in the same session. Woohoo!

It’s been awhile since I’ve joined up with the Look Up, Look Down Challenge and I thought these power lines would make a great entry. If you love taking up and down shots, I think you’d enjoy this challenge (here).

As always I am so pleased that you visited. Your comments warm my heart and put a smile in my day. :D

I wish we had buried power lines. In general I think they are ugly. BUT anything can look interesting from the right angle. 😉 Oh and the bike just had a loose connection to the battery… phew!

Thanks Amy. The bike ended up being just fine… my husband hadn’t connected the battery tightly enough. 😉

Technology today is amazing. Who would think you can get such great shots with a phone camera! I like teh juxtaposition picture. I’ve always liked the idea that the transmission lines are like alines roaming the landscape – War of the Worlds come to life.

well I have never seen power lines that looked like these – the poles look extra strong. And actually, I do not think I have spent much time really observing power lines – and out neighborhood has them buried – so that is kinda nice – but I really like how the power lines in your pics are thicker to the outer layer and thinner in the middle – and oh, sorry the bike broke down – 🙂
