There are a few holiday films that have a special place in my heart: The Bishops Wife (original B&W), Scrooge (musical with Albert Finney) and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. However, my all time favorite is The Ref.
The Ref is a 1994 American black comedy film directed by Ted Demme, produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer and starring Denis Leary, Judy Davis, and Kevin Spacey. – Wikipedia
I realize that this doesn’t sound like a traditional feel good holiday flick, but I just can’t help laughing all the way through it. Anyone who goes to any kind of family gathering will relate to it… no matter how functional your family is, the potential for differences of opinion is high and tumult is a distinct possibility even when simmering under the surface!
The thing that most touches my heart is the transformation the bickering couple goes through during the evening and hope does spring eternal. If you haven’t seen it, go for it – the performances are worth the view.
I absolutely love my family, but when you get enough of us together we do have an occasional snip and snap, or gossip behind a back, or the need for a few glasses of wine and serious alone time… how about you?
