Blogging 201 – Day 2: Branding My Baby

Today in Blogging University I am looking at my baby, my blog, and auditing its brand.

What the heck does that mean?

Today’s assignment: audit your brand — look at all the ways you communicate information about your blog, and make sure they’re consistent, focused, and say what you want them to say.

Michelle W, WordPress.com

This is something I have worked on for months. I love harmony and so I want my blog to be inviting, easy to navigate and beautiful. (After all, I have to look at my baby dozens of times a day!) I tried a number of themes before I settled on the one I have now. I am happy with the font, the colors and the responsive layout. Little by little I’ve refined it and at this point believe it is a good representation of me and what my blog is trying to do. It sets off my photographs and is welcoming and uplifting visually (I hope).

Love my baby!

I’m now in the process of unifying my ‘look’ around the web. So places like Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, etc. as well as my storefronts have a FireBonnet continuity to them.

I think I’ll take Michelle W’s advice and “Customize your widget titles and comment prompt.” I like some of what I have, but I think there is room for improvement, some of it is pretty generic.

One last thing that really bothers me, and I’m not sure how to fix it, is that my title and tag line (which I love) are really hard to read in my header. Argh… I can’t find anywhere in my theme that I can fix the font size and color there. Honestly, I’m not sure people even know I have a tag line! I may have to figure out some HTML or CSS (Greek to me) to do this.

So goals for this assignment?

  • Unify look across all my social sites.
  • Rewrite a few of my widget titles.
  • Research how to alter the header title and tagline. (Notice I said research… I’m not promising change anytime soon!)

Thanks for listening to my classwork… 😉 . Please feel free to skip any Blogging 201 posts if this topic isn’t your cup of tea. I perfectly understand. I just find it helpful to publish my goals to make them real for me.

Thank you for visiting my blog! Your comments warm my heart and put a smile in my day.

I’m thinking Mary is right and I’ll have to create my own header. We’ll see. Thanks for the compliment! Yours has changed too… I like every change you make. 🙂

Exactly Sally, those are the things I want to change but there doesn’t seem to be that option in my theme. But I’ll keep looking.

You’re right, the title slips by the reader. Maybe you can change your font color to white. Also it’s so small, and that makes it equally hard to read and see.

I think you are super pro active with making your blog look good and it’s changed a whole heap since I first saw it. I think your right with having to learn something technical to change taglines etc ie CSS or HTML of which I havnt a clue but like someone suggested maybe put it in your header? X

Thank you so much Paricia for saying that. I think it’s the analyst in me that keeps searching for answers (and order). (I was an admin analyst for years) I just try and try until something works or it doesn’t. I have paid for a service or two that help me to understand things a little better, but have not ventured into actual programming. And honestly? I probably won’t. But hey, there’s a lot of great free stuff out there to help us, it just waits to be found.

My hat is off to you for being so knowledgeable about all this technology. I’m a congenital idiot when it comes to navigating these waters and can only settle for simplification. I do admire all the changes you can make.
